While the narrative DNA in the upcoming action/sci-fi comedy Free Guy is easy enough to parse (it’s all in the article title, folks) but there’s a couple of things to keep in mind:

  1. It’s the way you blow up a bridge, to paraphrase Sam Peckinpah. Or, if you prefer Bananarama and Fun Boy 3, it ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it, and remixing old ideas to get new effects is at the heart of post modern art.
  2. Simulation theory‘s looking real good to a lot of people right now, given that the world is on fire.
  3. Hey, Taika’s in this thing! everyone loves Taika!
  4. If you put the Who’s “Baba O’Riley” on the soundtrack, I will get a Pavlovian emotional response, mainly due to that John Hughes tribute video that did the rounds after he died.

So, this thing’s looking pretty good to me, but let’s go to the marketing mavens for the official synopsis.

Ryan Reynolds stars as a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, and decides to become the hero of his own story—one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way, before it is too late.”

Also starring Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Free Guy is directed by Shawn Levy and is theoretically in cinemas from December 10, 2020, but don’t hold your breath. Bastards just knocked Dune back by 10 months, so anything could happen here.
