Shadecraft
Writer: Joe Henderson
Artist: Lee Garbett
Publisher: Image Comics

Looking for a story that will bring the emotional warmth you need, but also gel with a mysterious dark force, that will have you peaking behind the curtain? Then continue reading my friends. Shadecraft is a story of high school misfit Zadie, who is going through the normalities of teen life; boys, fitting in, and the usual family drama. But everything is not as it seems. Zadie is convinced shadows are coming to life and are stalking her and possibly even trying to kill her. Why the hell is this happening? Could this potentially tie into some of her family issues? And will Zadie face her fear and show these shadows who’s boss? These are the questions we are faced with by the end of the issue; so I say bring on issue two already!

Joe Henderson’s tale of possibly murderous shadows and teen life sounds like it wouldn’t work, but in actuality, it isn’t half bad. This first issue was indeed a light start, but the story has a lot of room to move and develop into something a little heftier. Shadecraft has heart when it comes to the story itself, and it folds neatly into the artwork. Lee Garbett understands how to bring glossy artwork, but it’s colourist Antonio Fabela’s who is the unsung hero of this comic. He can bring light-hearted colours which put the reader at ease, but then it will suddenly take a dark spiral and bring you into a world which a little colder.

This isn’t a full-blown horror comic book by the end of issue one, however, Shadecraft #1 brings enough to the table to keep you guessing and wanting more.
